About Merritt Architecture

History
Merritt Arch’s roots began in 1975 when James R. Merritt FAIA established his first independent architectural practice. Merritt has been a principal of many firms since this time, collaborating with others with common interests for varying periods of time.
In March 2001, Merritt, then principal of an architectural firm of 40 and partnered with a multi-disciplined engineering firm of 325, decided to reorganize his practice to focus on personal, hands-on client service and quality design. He did this by forming Merritt Arch PLLC, which, for the last seven years, has established itself as a leading architectural firm in Tacoma and throughout the Northwest.
Projects
Over the years, James R. Merritt FAIA has established a reputation as a leading Northwest Architect. He has been instrumental in the renaissance that has begun in Tacoma, which is particularly noteworthy with his work on the City’s focal point, The Tacoma Union Station. This building houses the Federal Court House and includes a spectacular Dale Chihuly exhibit.
Merritt Arch’s focus includes municipal, commercial, and educational projects which include a balanced blend of public and private funding. Our services/disciplines include architecture, planning, urban design, interior design, historical preservation, programming, facilitation and design visioning.
